J.Hilburn

J.Hilburn is a “slow fashion” company based in Dallas, TX, offering 11 categories of custom-made menswear. As their Senior Graphic Designer, I work under Chief Creative Officer Simon Kneen and Art Director/Photographer Dinah Whistler. During my time at the company, I have worked on digital, print, web, app, social, and video projects, designed icons, logos, and presentation decks, taken responsibility for copywriting and editing, and provided production and photography assistance when ‘on shoot.’ I am grateful to be able to participate in or observe every aspect of the fashion industry in this role, from the early stages of Simon’s sketches, inspirational imagery, and research to color to pattern to communication with fabric mills in Italy and Vietnam…to sewn garment to on-model fittings to photoshoot…to contact sheets to markups to designing the final catalog.

Spring/Summer 2024 Lookbook Cover

My favorite task at J.Hilburn is to create the seasonal lookbook each Fall and Spring. I funnel my background in photography and art history into my research and develop several concepts in the lookbook’s early development. From there, I consider the layouts needed for the content and create a cohesive first draft before pouring over rounds of edits to get the final product perfect. In addition, I design and execute the product catalog for the collection, integrating the data from the product team and website into a digital lookbook filled with campaign, product, and ‘key look’ photography. I have also worked on internal publications for J.Hilburn, such as the 99+ page ‘Branding and Process Guide’ that is required reading for each new employee.

The Spring/Summer 2024 Lookbook epitomizes the breezy and effortlessly elegant character of a warm-weather collection.

For our Fall/Winter 2023 lookbook, I drew inspiration from HBO’s hit television series “Succession.” We combined the quiet luxury evoked by New England’s countryside estates with the electrifying energy of Manhattan’s cobblestone streets for a truly dynamic feel.

Social media should not be secondary.

At J.Hilburn, social media marketing is essential to spread the word about our unique offerings. As Senior Graphic Designer, I work directly with our Marketing and Social Media Specialist to create content that is timely, dynamic, and culturally relevant. In doing so, I have developed and implemented a variety of social media campaigns focusing on a holiday, event, or individual product.

E-Comm

One of my favorite ongoing projects that I get to work on at J.Hilburn is designing the weekly client communications. These emails, which typically showcase a certain product, fabric, or collection are sent to customers two to three times per week. After meeting with Simon on his vision for the email, including his requested images and a rough idea of the copy, I work as a copyeditor and designer to visualize potential layouts before working with developers to execute the final send. The frequency and consistency of these communications give me more creative freedom and allow me to try out new visual ideas and textures, type styles, animations, crops, and even messaging concepts.
